Virtual Interior Design Services: How a Full Project Works Without Meeting

Virtual interior design means a designer plans your space without visiting it: you send a floor plan, photos and a video walk-through, and you receive layouts, visualizations and, in a full project, the drawings a builder works from. Everything is agreed over video calls. You never need to be in the same city, or the same country.

That is the short answer. The longer one matters more, because "virtual interior design" covers two very different products sold under the same name.

Two things called "virtual interior design"

Search the term and most results describe e-design: a mood board, a furniture layout for one room and a shopping list with links. It is usually priced per room, often a few hundred dollars, and it works well for one job — furnishing a room whose walls, floors and wiring you are keeping.

The second product is a full design project done remotely. Walls move, the kitchen changes place, electrics and plumbing are redrawn, and the result is a set of documents a construction crew can build from. That is what we do. Since 2018 our studio has completed 1,172 projects in 48 countries this way, most of them for clients we never met in person.

If you are repainting and buying a sofa, e-design is enough. If you are renovating, it is not. A shopping list tells nobody where the sockets go.

How a full virtual project works, step by step

1. A video call about the property. You show us what you have: the developer's floor plan, photos, a phone video walking through every room. We ask how you live, not what style you like. Who works from home. How many people cook at once. Where the stuff goes. 2. Price and deadline in the contract. Both are fixed before work starts. The rate is per square metre and published on our pricing page, so you can calculate it before the call. 3. Measurements. From the developer's as-built drawings, by our own team, or by a checked local surveyor — details below. 4. Layouts, 1–2 weeks. Two or three options. Up to three rounds of changes, while changes are still free. 5. Visualizations of every room. Not three nice angles. Every room, every wall that matters. 6. Drawings and specification, 2–3 weeks. A PDF album with construction drawings and every item listed by manufacturer and part number. 7. Support during the build, if you choose it: online everywhere, on site in some countries.

"But who measures the apartment?"

This is the first question almost everyone asks, and it has a boring answer. There are three options:

• Developer's drawings. For new buildings, as-built dimensions are often accurate enough on their own.
• Our team. In Cyprus, Poland and Ukraine (Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi) we measure ourselves.
• A local surveyor. Elsewhere we point you to a checked surveyor near the property and tell them exactly what we need.

All you provide is access. Someone has to open the door. It does not have to be you.

How do you approve a design you have never stood inside?

You look at it. That sounds flippant, but it is the actual mechanism.

In a traditional project, a lot is agreed in words at a meeting: "a lighter oak, something warm on that wall". Two people leave the room imagining two different floors. A remote project cannot rely on that, so everything is drawn and rendered before anyone buys anything. You approve a picture of the room, with the actual materials in it, from several angles. That is a stricter standard than a showroom visit, not a weaker one.

Samples are the one place where the screen is not enough. Colour on a monitor lies a little. For finishes that cover large areas — flooring, wall tiles, paint — we name exact products, and you check a physical sample locally before ordering.

What happens when the build starts and nobody is on site?

The drawings are made for this situation. A crew with a full album and a specification with part numbers has very little left to guess, and most renovation disasters start with a guess.

Beyond that, you choose the level of support:

• Online supervision, anywhere. The crew sends photos and video at agreed stages. We check them against the drawings and flag deviations before they are covered with plaster. We also answer the builders' questions directly, so you are not the translator between them and us.
• On-site supervision in Cyprus, Poland and Ukraine, where our people visit the property.
• Full service in Cyprus: construction and furnishing handled by us with local contractors, for owners who don't live on the island.

What virtual interior design costs

For e-design, expect a per-room fee. For a full project, the honest unit is the square metre. Our rates:

• €35/m² — layouts and visualizations of every room
• €50/m² — the above plus drawings and specification
• €80/m² — the full project plus the first two months on site.

So an 80 m² apartment is €2,800 for a basic project and €4,000 for a full one. Working remotely does not make the project cheaper by itself (the drawing work is the same), but it removes travel costs and, more usefully, lets you pick a studio by its portfolio instead of by postcode. When a virtual project is the wrong choice

It is only fair to say where this works badly.

If you want to choose every material by walking through showrooms with your designer, a local studio will suit you better. The same goes for old houses with no drawings, uneven walls and hidden structural surprises, unless someone competent can survey them properly first. And if you cannot find an hour a week for calls and approvals, no format will save the project. Remote just makes that more visible.

For most apartments and houses, though, distance is not the risk people expect it to be. The real risks are decisions made in words, layouts changed after drawings, and crews improvising. None of those depend on where the designer sits.

Is online interior design the same as virtual interior design? Yes, the terms are used interchangeably. What matters is the scope: a room makeover or a full renovation project.

Do I need to be in the country during the project? No. You need a stable internet connection and someone who can let a surveyor in. Many of our clients bought property abroad and live elsewhere.

What do I need to send to get started? A floor plan if you have one, photos of every room, and a short video walk-through. The address and the area in m² are enough for a price.

Can I use my own builders? Yes. The album is a document, not a subscription. Any competent crew can build from it, anywhere.

What if something in the drawings is wrong? If the error is ours, we correct the drawing and align it with the crew at no extra charge.
