AI Interior Design vs an Interior Designer: What AI Can and Can't Do Yet

AI interior design tools are good at one thing: showing you a mood. Upload a photo of a room, pick a style, and in seconds you get a picture of how it could look. What they can't do yet is produce a layout that fits your actual walls, drawings a builder can follow, or a list of real products with part numbers. For inspiration, use AI. For a renovation, you still need a project.

We use generative tools ourselves, at the early stage, and we see many clients arrive with AI pictures. So this is not a "robots are bad" article. It is a map of where the line currently sits.

What AI does well

Quick style exploration. Ten versions of your living room in ten styles, in a minute. That used to take a designer days of mood boards. It helps you find out what you like before you spend money on anyone.

Talking to a designer. A client who shows us five AI images saves an hour of "warm but not too warm". Pictures are a better brief than adjectives.

Redecorating an existing room. If walls and wiring stay, and you only change colours, textiles and furniture, AI plus a sense of proportion can get you surprisingly far.

Where AI stops

Put an AI render next to a real project album and the gaps are obvious.

Dimensions. A generated image has no scale. The sofa in the picture might need 3.2 metres; your wall has 2.7. Nothing warns you.

Layout. AI redraws the surface of a room. It doesn't decide where the kitchen should go, how to fit a second bathroom, or whether a wall can be removed at all. Those decisions carry the most value in any project, and they depend on the building's structure, the utility risers and local rules.

Engineering. Electrics, plumbing, ventilation, underfloor heating, ceiling heights under ducts. A generated picture shows a pendant lamp over the island. It doesn't show that the ceiling above has a beam and no room for the wire.

Real products. The oak floor in an AI image doesn't exist. Neither does the tile. A real project ends with a specification: every item named by manufacturer, article number and quantity, so the crew builds exactly what was approved.

Responsibility. When a drawing is wrong, someone has to fix it and talk to the builders. A tool won't.

The expensive mistake

The risk isn't that AI images are ugly. They're usually lovely. The risk is handing one to a builder and saying "make it like this".

The builder will. With their own guesses on every dimension, every socket and every material, because the picture doesn't say. That is exactly the situation a project exists to prevent. Most renovation overspending comes from decisions made on site, in a hurry, by someone who wasn't asked to make them.

How to use AI well before hiring a designer

1. Generate images of your own rooms in a few styles. Save the ones you return to. 2. Note what you like in each: the light, a material, the amount of storage. Not the whole picture. 3. Bring them to the first call. It will shorten the brief. 4. Don't fall in love with a layout from an AI image. It wasn't drawn for your walls.

Will AI replace interior designers?

Parts of the job, already. Mood boards and first-draft visuals are faster now, and that's good for clients — it makes projects quicker. The parts that carry the money — planning, engineering, specification and supervision — still depend on your building, your budget and someone accountable. We'd expect that line to move. It hasn't moved far yet.
